The new Shimano Stradic FM 2023 has undergone significant changes compared to its predecessor, the FL, and incorporates many top features and technologies from its higher-end sibling, the Stella FK. The long-standing Shimano Stradic line is known to many anglers as a true "workhorse" due to its stability and durability. While the reel retains the same color scheme, the spool's design has been updated from straight vertical grooves to diagonal ones.
The Stradic FM is equipped with some of Shimano's best technologies, including Hagane Gear, X-Ship, Micro Module II, Silent Drive, Infinity Xross, and Infinity Drive. These advanced technologies are implemented within a lightweight Hagane aluminum body, contributing to impressive power and smooth operation even under load.
The main changes involve the drive mechanism — the gears are now made using Infinity Xross technology, with new tooth geometry that has improved the contact patch, positively affecting both the performance and durability of the mechanism. The new MicroModule II gear system, featuring cold-forged metal, ensures enhanced durability and smoother operation under load.
The Stradic FM is equipped with Infinity Drive, which ensures smoother rotation without compromising power. To achieve this, Shimano has added a low-friction bushing to the main shaft, which previously rested on the gear. This design significantly reduces frictional resistance. Additionally, the main shaft of the Stradic FM features Shimano's proprietary surface treatment technology that reduces torque, enhancing the feeling of lightness under load.
In addition, the Shimano Stradic FM features an upgraded drag system called Duracross Drag, designed to ensure smooth operation of the drag's felt washers, with a claimed load capacity up to 10 times greater than previous models. One of the key design aspects of the drag material is the weaving method. The interwoven fibers of the felt washers are reinforced and have a more textured surface, allowing them to create more precise braking friction while quickly dissipating heat. Duracross Drag effectively absorbs powerful fish runs during the fight.
The Stradic FM features a water-repellent coating on its body called Shimano X-Protect, along with a new water drainage system similar to Daiwa's MagSealed. This enhancement improves reliability by preventing water and small particles from entering the main mechanism of the fishing reel.
The Long Stroke AR-C spool enhances casting distance. The Anti-Twist Fin system prevents line twisting. The handle is made entirely of metal and screws into the mechanism to minimize play.
